The Poe Shadow

Just started reading Matthew Pearl’s “The Poe Shadow”…which I’m finding pretty amusing so far…it kind of reads like Lovecraft …the antiquated language, the overwrought unreliable narrator, messages from the grave buried in libraries and news articles…so far so good (at page 55)…

Pearl’s first novel was “The Dante Club”, which, it turns out, I haven’t read. I thought “The Poe Shadow” was the follow-up to “The Dumas Club” – which is actually an entirely different book, titled “The Club Dumas” and is by Arturo Perez Reverte.  This is also an excellent book that has nothing to do with “The Poe Shadow”, other than they’re both books about books.

“The Club Dumas” was adapted into a decent film “The Ninth Gate” directed by Roman Polanski, who, I just find out today was married to Sharon Tate, famous for starring in Valley of the Dolls, and more famous for being murdered by the Manson family.)

  1. Great stuff, Marc! Another interesting fact is that Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski starred opposite each-other in “The Fearless Vampire Killers.” Polanksi is the bumbling vampire slayer’s assistant, she’s the damnsel in distress… Pretty funny, and neat poster art.
