So…our game made the cover of Play Magazine - this was a big team effort; the bulk of the painting was done by a couple of talented artists at Massive Black, based on our character designs and in-game models, as well as a high rez character model sculpted at Gentle Giant Studios. Here’s the final image, and a little bit of my background work…

Yes this is a terrible painting - not the point here…testing setting up a tablet on an old laptop…too old as it turned out, was ridiculously slow. Also a painting test - trying out the novel idea of using the right colors the first time. I used to rely too much on painting in greyscale and tinting with color and overlay layers…trying not to do that anymore…

Sometimes you get these fantastically difficult foreshortened compositions. Often I wimp out; move to a flat angle, or crop the figure. This particular model is very lean, deeply defined muscles, prominent joints. I’d been looking for a chance to go all Egon Schiele with her. This was the perfect combo of awkwardness and structural design….
