I’ve had a constant problem with likeness - as in; I don’t usually like the likeness I get (say that five times). It takes me more than a few sittings with a model before I can do a sketch that actually resembles the person. Some guys I know can put a 100 hours into an image, and it becomes this amazing painting - I don’t know how they do it - I certainly don’t have the attentional fortitude. I’m more likely to do 100 images looking for one that works.
Here’s a few more from the same pose.
There are a few brush strokes in this last recline that I’m pretty damn happy with.

Just got back from the Torrez workshop in Pueblo - took almost a week to recover - great fun, but exhausting. Four days straight, painting 5 and 10 min oil sketches all day. A great way to get better fast! I feel like I got a lot out of the course, particularly seeing subtle warm and cool skin tones and getting more confidence with thick and juicy paint. I’d recommend her course to anyone who wants to paint more expressively. It’s *not* an academic class, so be prepared to learn by doing!
Here’s some pics, excuse the bad photos, we were working very fast.
Here’s the last two paintings of the workshop - I think I was just starting to learn something with these:
