NWN2 early pre-production

Posted by tarosan on March 29, 2007

Was looking into some old files - found a couple of early character designs from NWN2. These weren’t the final designs, the characters always change quite a bit from the first sketches to the final game models.

oil sketch ten

Posted by tarosan on March 26, 2007

Here we go: day two on that seated pose with Jen. I’m seeing some improvement here - good thing, ‘cuz this is about the stage I get bored with things and give up! That’s the good thing about getting older - you aren’t necessarily wiser, but you’re aware that you don’t have as much time to screw around….last chance to freaking master these paints! Time’s running out!

oil sketch eight…

Posted by tarosan on March 19, 2007

My eighth oil - continued progress…getting the feel for the paint. She turned out uber pink, but In a way, I like it. It’s all Anders Zornish :) (Ok, not really, I just looked and he’s not as high key as I remember - how about Fragonardy? - if that’s not a real art term it should be.) I’m using a very limited palette, as in crimson, orange, prussian blue, cerulean blue and white…probably I need more subtle hues. Next go-around I’m going to try more medium, see if I can achieve a smoother finish…

form follows fitness…

Posted by tarosan on March 19, 2007

We worked with a new model this week who has to be the most physically fit woman I’ve ever drawn from life. It was an interesting feeling - my drawings kept turning out too slender - I was unconsciously leaving out muscles, could feel myself trying to draw from memory instead of capturing the real anatomy in front of me. Was a good wake up call about letting the drawing become rote, or formula.

oil’s #4 and 5; beyond the pale

Posted by tarosan on March 12, 2007

Ok, I have to say, pale skin is tricksy. Damn those fine artists and their natural light. Give me some nice black shadows and I’m at home….but - I suppose I have no choice but to learn this, if I’m ever to get those vampire paintings right.

blue velvet painting

Posted by tarosan on March 12, 2007

My third oil painting. Some progress I think - or it could just be ‘cuz it’s monochrome, or because it’s from a great photo, or because I’ve drawn her a few times already… the ‘model’ is a talented photographer that goes by the handle blue-velvet. Check out her impressive photostream:

dipping in the oil

Posted by tarosan on March 5, 2007

So - BIG THING FOR ME: March 04, 2007 - a dusty garage studio in north Dallas, natural light filters in from the skylights, easels, brushes, and paintings stacked all around the room, me in the crowd with a group of super experienced artists and a great model - it’s now or never time! I finally get up the courage to try my first ‘for real’ oil paintings….
