art theft as exercise

Posted by tarosan on August 28, 2006

Generally I think drawing from photos is a kind of riding of artistic coat tails. The photographer has done the art already and I’m just stealing from it…but - I felt out of practice, faces all coming out the same, everything looking cartoony.

So these heads are all stolen from various photographs…they’re actually a few months old, and I think, less good that they should be, but this is the kind of exercise I think you have to do every so often…so they’re up here for whatever that’s worth.

Rachel Brice, tribal dance

Posted by tarosan on August 22, 2006

It constantly amazes me how there are people obsessed with becoming masters of some art form that I’ve never heard of.

This weekend I saw a few short minutes of Rachel Brice performing her unique style of Tribal Dance. (here’s her site). This was frankly the most amazing thing I’ve seen in a long time. If you get a chance to see this San Francisco based artist, or any of her Tribal school – GO!. You’ll see something amazing, inspiring and challenging - (and more than a little hot).

tentacle girl

Pen and ink sketch, some brushwork. Gotta love those self-casing travel brushes. (used to have a link here, but Daniel Smith moved the page - you’ll have to google for them)….and drawing at Starbucks, which rocks, ‘cuz there’s lots of cups lying around. (For the ink and water, I’m not a coffee guy)….
